Winter Hiking The Flume, 1/13/22

Date: 1/13/22

A popular White Mountains destination in the summer, The Flume is also a great hike in the winter (and free). While the gorge itself is closed to hikers, the two-mile loop sees a fair amount of traffic, particularly on weekends. Crampons are highly recommended, as the trail can be quite icy in spots. This is a fun hike with lots to see — highly recommended.

: The path to the Flume loop is just off the parking lots and between these two sheds.

: After a hundred yards or so, the path splits to the two ends of the loop. I recommend taking the right path.

: The first covered bridge you will come to.

: A second covered bridge over a steep gorge is on the far end of the loop.

This 4.5 mile in and out trail is an easy hike out to a unique part of the Groton State Forest in Vermont: the 748 acre Peacham Bog Natural Area.

Winter Hiking Kilburn Craig, Littleton, New Hampshire 12/28/21

Managed to get a quick winter hike in before the end of the year. Kilburn Craig is an easy, short hike, although the first third of it is a bit on the steep side. The payoff is a great overlook of Littleton, New Hampshire.

: The trail start at a small parking lot just off Route 18/135 (2-3 spots, although you can park along the road).

: You’ll hit fields first…

: … then it starts to climb.

: Most of the trail is through woods.

: Pick a clear day for a breathtaking view of the White Mountains in the distance (although clouds are nice too!).

Foliage from Wright’s Mountain, Bradford, Vermont (10/6/21)

Wright’s Mountain offers a short 1.6 mile out and back hike with a great overlook of the valley. Elevation here is 360 ft. There were families at the summit, so I killed the video just before reaching it. The final sweep of the valley isn’t great (note to me next time: remove the camera from the harness and sweep by hand), but check out the stills for how impressive the view is, particularly during foliage.

Kayaking on Ticklenaked Pond, Ryegate, Vermont (10/4/21)

Yes, that says Ticklenaked. I think the locals mangled the Native American name for the pond back in the day, so now we have one of the more interesting body of water names in the country.

So, this was shot later in the day, and it was pretty overcast. We are starting to get some decent coloring for foliage, but you really can’t see it much here. A heron or two think I was chasing them a bit (my take: we were just going the same direction), and I angered a couple of geese, but not much moving around out there as the season shuts down. And no Vermont video is complete without a chainsaw and gunshots in the background. 🙂
